Visa Information for Medical Travelers to India

Effective Date: [Insert Date]

At India Medical Trip, we understand that traveling to another country for medical treatment requires careful planning — and obtaining the correct visa is a key part of that process. This page is designed to provide general guidance for patients and their attendants seeking medical treatment in India.

1. Medical Visa Overview

The Government of India offers a Medical Visa (MED Visa) for foreign nationals who wish to travel to India to receive medical treatment at recognized and specialized hospitals or treatment centers. This visa is typically granted for:

  • Serious ailments or specialized treatments

  • Complex medical procedures such as cardiac surgery, organ transplants, neurosurgery, joint replacement, and similar advanced care

  • Other approved treatments at registered medical institutions

2. Duration and Validity

  • Medical Visas are usually issued for a period of up to 6 months and may allow triple entry during that time.

  • Extensions may be granted in certain medical circumstances upon approval by the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO).

3. Eligibility

To qualify for a Medical Visa, applicants generally need:

  • A confirmed appointment or recommendation from a recognized hospital or treatment center in India

  • Relevant medical records or reports from the home country

  • Proof of financial ability to cover treatment and stay expenses

  • A valid passport with at least 6 months’ validity

4. Attendant Visa

Patients can be accompanied by up to two attendants, who may be close relatives. These attendants can apply for a Medical Attendant Visa (MED-X Visa), which is typically granted for the same duration as the patient’s visa.

5. Application Process

Applicants can apply for a Medical Visa through the official Indian Visa Online portal or at the nearest Indian Embassy or Consulate. The process usually requires:

  • Filling out the online application form

  • Uploading required documents

  • Paying the applicable visa fee

  • Attending a visa interview (if required)

6. Important Notes

  • Visa approval is at the sole discretion of the Government of India.

  • India Medical Trip does not process visas but can provide necessary documentation from the hospital to support your application.

  • Travelers must comply with Indian immigration laws and register with the FRRO if staying longer than 180 days.
